Gently slide your fingers along a lavender spike, close your eyes and drift into the haze of summer with bees buzzing and the sunshine warming your skin. The scent of lavender evokes sweet dreams of bygone days. Lavender, a hardy perennial, is popular with most gardeners, both for its fragrance and form. Lavender is also a favorite scent for men, second only to pumpkin pie spices.
Lavender has been selected the 1999 “Herb of the Year” by the International Herb Growers of America. We feel that lavender is one of the finest plants you can purchase for your garden. Given good drainage and full sun, lavender will flourish. It makes an excellent hedge, border plant or accent plant. Over the years, we have discovered that there are many more varieties of lavender than we ever guessed.
Years ago, Munstead and Hidcote lavenders were often found in Northwest gardens. Over time many species have been both imported and developed here. We are lucky to have Andy and Melissa Van Hevelingen’s wholesale nursery located nearby in Newburg. They have
developed and propagated many beautiful lavenders that grow well in the Northwest.
Lavenders come in all sizes, colors and shapes. There are
mauve, violet, dark purple, pink, white and even yellow lavenders. English, Italian,French, Spanish, Australian, New Zealand and American lavenders are on the market. Lavenders range in size from the new Blue Cushion at 8-10’’ to the Seattle lavender, Wooly. that measures 48”
high. Spanish lavenders, stoechas, have an usual flower head topped by three showy petals, thus the common name for Spanish is butterfly lavender.

We have over forty varieties in our display garden and can’t pick a favorite. However the dark purples like Royal Purple, Mitcham Grey, Sachet and Nana are favorites of our customers. We like the showy Spanish, especially the Pedunculata and Willowvale. Provence, mauve, and Alba, white, are beautiful French lavenders that
bloom all summer. The French lavender Grosso makes a romantic drift of bloom in summer. Goodwin Creek, Silver Frost, Ana Luisa and Richard rey are handsome Northwest lavenders with silver foliage that is ttractive in the garden year round. Melissa and Jean Davis have pale ink blooms, while the Yellow Spanish completes the color range

Lavender has been used for centuries to help relieve the
discomfort of headaches. Eye pillows of flax and lavender are used, as ell as soothing essential oil of lavender.
Potpourris utilize lavender’s clean fragrance. Herbs de Provence is a lend of Mediterranean spices, including lavender, that is fabulous on hicken, lamb, beef, or potatoes. We use lavender in our teas, bath
blends, massage oils, and sachets. Aromatherapy includes lavender as an stress reducer. An old English custom was to make lavender wands or bottles from lavender flowers and stems, by bending the stems down over the flowers and weaving ribbon through the stems. We make them every summer.
Lavender is a wonderful addition to the garden.
